National Film Library and Archive, Television ya Taifa (TVT)

Page history last edited by Paul Keenan 14 years ago

Date of tip: April 2007

Source: Alicia Altorfer-Ong, a.n.altorfer-ong@lse.ac.uk

Location: New Bagamoyo Road, Mwenge. After the Village Museum and New World Cinema, before the junction with Mwenge Handicraft Centre (on Mandela Road).

How to get there: If going by taxi, ask for TVT (Television ya Taifa). If going by daladala (local minibus) from the city centre (Posta stop), take the service which goes to Mwenge.

Language: English and Kiswahili.

Getting started: I was allowed on-the-spot access with my COSTECH research permit, a reference letter from the LSE, as well as my local advisor at Dar es Salaam University College of Education (assigned to me by COSTECH). Call ahead of your visit to check for any changes.

Opening Hours: Daily, 0800-2200 hours. The library is a resource for TVT staff so keeps long hours. Call to confirm before you visit. 022 270 0062 or 022 277 2669.

General working conditions: I made my request to the librarian on duty and she promptly went through their collection to pull out the relevant video tapes. Do some preliminary research to narrow down what you might be looking for because there is no comprehensive index/listing. I had the title of a particular documentary, so waiting time was minimal (under five minutes) and the librarian also found two related news clips. What might take a while is the waiting time to use the viewing room. The equipment is shared by TVT staff for editing/recording/etc. so there might be a queue (I had to wait 1.5 hours). Visits from non-journalists are infrequent, so the facilities/services are not necessarily geared towards supporting research.

Consultation: No. The librarian is happy to show you whatever material is relevant.

Policy on technology: No copying of footage unless officially requested for.

Photocopy policy: Requests for copies should be made in writing (official letter) to the Director of the National Film Library and Archive, Television ya Taifa. Pricing varies (the librarian was unable to give me an estimate/range), but do mention that the copy will be used for academic research (unless it is intended for broadcasting of course).

Particularities: There is a basic cafeteria in an adjacent building that serves hot lunch from 1300 hours on weekdays. Ask the librarian for directions. The archive has 1 librarian on duty during opening hours, and a total of 4 on their roster (to support the long opening hours), so some procedures might vary depending on the person on duty.
