National Library of India, Calcutta

Page history last edited by Andrew Otis 8 years, 3 months ago

Date of tip: August 2013-September 2014

Location: Plot No.1A, Belvedere Road, Alipore, Kolkata, West Bengal 700027

How to get there: Take the Metro to Jatin Das Park. Take a Khidderpore bound auto. Get down at the Western side gate of the National Library. The main building is the modern concrete building to the south, not the Colonial Mansion (formerly Warren Hastings's)

Language: English, Bengali

Getting started: You will need a photocopy of your passport and visa, two passport photos, and may need a letter of introduction from your supervisor or institution. Also a filled out "Reading Room Member" application form. Available online.

Opening Hours: 9am-8pm. Reprography (microfilm) division closes at 5:30pm

General working conditions: Air conditioned. Staff smokes in the central building space. Fair conditions.

Policy on technology: Laptops allowed on request. Bring a printed request, in triplicate. Requests are valid for 3 months. No photography.

Photocopy policy: Photocopies on request. At one point the "reprography division," where the microfilms are kept, gave digital copies but they discontinued that practice. They will only give 1/3 of the total document.

Particularities: There is a cafeteria on the North East side of the Compound. Food quality is poor. Outside the main gate is a Sugarr & Spice, that serves passable shwarma, especially if you ask for it without mayonnaise.

Reprography (microfilm) division holdings (Second floor):
