Location: Opposite Appu Ghar, Tilak Marg, New Delhi, DL 110001

How to get there: Take the Metro to Pragati Maidan

Language: English, Hindi

Getting started: You will need a photocopy of your passport and or photo ID as well as the original. Four letters stating your research purpose and specific records you would like to access, preferably on institutional letterhead and. These should be addressed to 1. The Director of the Records Room, 2. The Director of the Library and 3. To the Registrar. 4. A co It's a bit hard to determine which registrar your request will go to since there many.

One of the difficulties of the Supreme Court is that you need to be invited in and cannot go meet one of the registrars or employees without a prior appointment. You can contact the director of the Library to set up a meeting. At the time of research he is:

Dr. R.K. Shrivastava

Director (Library)

Phone No. 011-2338 9248

011-2338 4361

Fax No. 011-2338 7565

email :

Counter 39 is for general enquiries. Submit your letter in person to Counter 6. To enter the building, first get a meeting and then go to the Public Relations Officer to the left of counter 23 for an entry pass.

Alternatively, you can post your mail to the Supreme Court and then follow up in person later.

Enter through one of the main gates in the front.

Opening Hours: 10am-5pm

Archives

  • The library is on the second floor of the east side of the building. From the main entrance go straight, take the first staircase on the right, go up a flight of stairs, turn left, walk to the point of the building where the columns begin, and the door should be on your left.
  • The archive is on the first (ground) floor, under Court Room No. 5. Sort of in the center/north west side of the Court.
  • The museum is outside the Supreme Court building grounds, to the north. No permissions are required to enter. But they have no other items than what are display, I have been told.

General working conditions: Fine conditions. Records room/archive is a bit of a mess. Library is well organized but has no primary source documents. The Records Room only has documents from post 1937. Additionally, they have told me that they throw out their paper documents at the end of every year and digitize their records.

Policy on technology: Unknown

Photocopy policy: Unknown

Particularities: Dr. Anup Surendranath, (dyreg.anupsurendranath@sci.nic.in) the new Deputy Registrar of Research is very helpful, and has been brought in to smooth the process of research.
