Getting started: The website is quite good and has their archive catalog. Most of their holdings deal with pre and post independence periods.  Large collections of private papers. Almost nothing pre-19th century.

 

Foreign researchers: to access the record room, you need:

 

  1. Letter of introduction from your home university, containing your research topic. Addressed to "Manuscripts Division"
  2. Letter of introduction from your embassy to the "Nehru Memorial Director"
  3. A filled out form, which you can get also get at the archive.

 

Indian Researchers:

Hours: 9-5:30

 

Archives

 

General working conditions: Excellent conditions. Well laid out, friendly staff.

 

Policy on technology: Cameras prohibited. Bags checked at security. Phones on silent and given to the room staff.

 

Photocopy policy: Photocopies can be requested at 10am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm. Only 1/4 of a collection be duplicated. Permission must be granted first, and payment given.

 

Particularities: There is a canteen. Serves decent food.
